Tips for Getting Back into Your Fitness Routine After Pregnancy

Tips for Getting Back into Your Fitness Routine After Pregnancy

Whether you just gave birth three months ago, or it’s been a couple years since your little one greeted the world, you may not be into a fitness routine just yet. Us moms focus so intently on ensuring our kids are healthy, that our own health is shifted to the back-burner.

Though there are many different forms of health—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual—here, I am specifically talking about getting back into your physical health.

One of the best ways to stay physically healthy is by sticking to a routine. If you frequent this blog, you likely had a stellar routine that you enjoyed. But, after you added Mom to your job description, your fitness routine is anything but routine.

Here is a quick round-up of my best tips to get back into a fitness routine that doesn’t stress you out!

Tips for Getting Back into Your Fitness Routine After Pregnancy

Get Yourself Gear You’re Excited About

One of the hardest aspects for a lot of postpartum women, is that they lose confidence in their bodies. Pregnancy takes a toll—albeit beautiful—on the body, and that can impact your confidence when start back. Your body looks different, and feels different when you move it.

When you’re getting back into the routine, choose items that help build your confidence and are the best workout clothes for what you’re doing. Invest in key pieces for each layer: sports bra (you will most likely need a new size, especially if breastfeeding), tank, top, short, and capri. You want to feel comfortable when you workout, and, let’s face it, you deserve some nice gear!

Start Small and Build Up

A mistake a lot of people make when getting back into a workout routine is starting where they were pre-pregnancy. It’s imperative, especially for new moms, that you start small with your movement and exercise and build back up.

Around 6 weeks postpartum, you’ll meet with your healthcare provider to ensure you’re ready to exercise, and I always recommend meeting with a pelvic floor specialist as well.

Start with basic core exercises – yogalates is great for this! – add in strength training with bodyweight exercises, and build up your endurance with cardio once your core and muscles are feeling good.

Find What Motivates You

What once motivated you may not be the same anymore. It’s normal to have priorities that shift as a new mom—give yourself time and flexibility to find a new rhythm for yourself. What used to give you that rush of endorphins may have changed.

For me, I stopped gravitating to cardio, and made strength training and yoga my highest priority. Going to yoga class and immersing myself in a calm and quiet hour for me became much more coveted than it was before I had my son.

Get Creative with the Logistics

This is one of the most difficult things about being an active mother—figuring out how to fit exercise in! The key here is being flexible. Before kids, you maybe only had a Plan A. It is now crucial to have a back up plan, and be able to seize the moment.

A few ideas and tips:
  • Short workout before your child is up
  • Break it up throughout the day – before your kid is up, during naps or independent play, after they go to bed
  • Take advantage of gym childcare – the Y is highly affordable
  • Fit4Mom – workout and bring your baby
  • Partner with other mom(s) – moms workout, kids play
  • Commute to work as workout
  • Hold your baby or incorporate high fives, tickles, and singing into your routine (they are like a Shake Weight!)
  • Workout at a playground
  • Have a dance party

Recognize That This Time Is Important

If you really want to get back into a fitness routine, then you need to recognize that this time of you working on your fitness is just as important as other times of the day. It’s just as important as making sure your child takes their naps, and that the rest of the family gets their dinner. Your health is important—don’t discount that!

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of feeling exercise – or taking any time for yourself – is selfish. Taking time to exercise is so important for your mental and physical health. You don’t have to take hours a day, or even a week, to get the benefit, and it makes you a better mom!

I work with women from preconception through early motherhood, when exercise has a way of falling by the wayside. If you could use outside accountability, schedule your free 20 minute Discovery Call we can decide if you’re a fit for health coaching!

There’s ‘no one size fits all’ answer that will tell you how frequent you must exercise.

Unlike other workout plans out there that claim to be for beginners but literally want you to jump from your couch to doing burpees and other crazy stuff, none of that will happen here.

You won’t be doing 10 burpees, 50 squats, or 20 push-ups! This routine places emphasis on compound exercises that engage several muscles at a time.

Unrealistic workout plans for beginners are only meant to set you up for failure because after a few days, you won’t be able to keep up the crazy pace.

However, a simplified workout guide like this one teaches how to ease into fitness and exercise, and how to properly progress from week to week, and month to month.

How to start working out for the first time

  • Take photos of yourself before you start this 30-day fat burning workout challenge.
  • At the end of the 30 days, take your after photos and compare the progress from when you started to where you are after 30 days.

How to warm up before exercising

You must always start your workouts with a dynamic warm-up and finish off with cool-down stretches to prevent injury.

Dynamic warm-up

Dynamic warm-up simply means stretching the body muscles through movement, and not static stretches.

This kind of warm-up is important for basically waking up the muscles that you will be utilising during the workout.

It’s perfectly okay, however, to cool down with static stretches.

Repeat the same movement, this time make the circles in the other direction.

3. Hip circles – 60 seconds

Still, in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart, place hands on hips. Rotate your hips in a clockwise movement for 30 seconds.

Rotate your hips in the opposite direction for another 30 seconds.

4. Standing toe touches – 60 seconds

Stand up nice and tall. In a slow, controlled movement, bend down and with your right hand, reach for and touch your left foot.

Slowly get back up to your starting position and reach for your right foot with your left hand.

Repeat for 1 minute.

5. Lateral step with arm swings- 60 seconds

Stand up straight with arms raised up your head. Step back to the left with your right foot at the same time swinging your arms back to follow the direction to the foot that you are stepping back with.

Cool Down  Stretches

You should always end your workout session with cool-down stretches while your muscles are still warm. Stretching after exercise is important because it helps enhance flexibility and reduce injury.

4. Standing wall stretch –  30 seconds

Start in front of a wall and stretch out your arm until they are touching the wall.  Walk your hands up against the wall and press back until you feel the stretch in your shoulders. Avoid pushing it the wall as that might cause shoulder injury.

Hold the stretch for 30 seconds or longer if your shoulders are too tight.

5. Child’s Pose stretch – 45 seconds

This stretch will release stress, calm you while stretching out the hips, lower back, thighs, and upper body. You can hold the stretch for 45 seconds or as long as 5 minutes.

Ultimate Fat-Burning Workouts: Tabata

Ultimate Fat-Burning Workouts: Tabata

Hands ups if you have never heard of Tabata?

If you haven’t, this could be the most important fitness discovery you make this year!

It’s not really new, but it has become increasingly popular in fitness circles over the last year or so.

Ultimate Fat-Burning Workouts: Tabata

What is Tabata?

Tabata is essentially a type of high-intensity interval training where you focus on a different exercise for four minutes at a time. Back in the day, I’m pretty sure we used to call it circuit training and I know the military have been using this kind of training since forever.

What makes it slightly different is the particular protocol used, which refers to the name of a Japanese physician called Dr Izumi Tabata. Who was hired to test the efficacy of the interval training protocol used by the Japanese speed skating team in the 1990’s.

His study compared high-intensity interval training against moderate intensity training and the results identified the aerobic and anaerobic benefits of using intermittent workouts of 20 seconds with 10 seconds recovery.

Among all the fitness trends and fads out there, the great thing about Tabata is that the protocol used is actually backed by rigorous scientific research.

I don’t know about you, but if I am going to use my precious time to get in shape. I want to be doing something that actually works.

And Tabata is a great workout if you are short on time or you are looking at ways of cross-training.

It’s perfect for group training as everyone can train at their own intensity level.

You’ll see results fast!

How Is Tabata Done?

With Tabata, you can basically use any exercise you like.

Squat jumps, squat thrusts, burpees – pretty much any exercise that works the major muscle groups.

Tabata does not have to always use high impact exercises though to get results. In fact, the original Tabata Protocol was done on a static bike. You can also incorporate weights, kettlebells, chin/pull ups or rope jumping.

Pretty much anything where you can quickly reach a high intensity. For that reason, running on a treadmill doesn’t usually work as it takes too long for the machine to reach a high speed.

The format is super simple. Here is an example using press ups only as an exercise:

  • Press ups – 20 seconds at high intensity
  • 10 seconds rest
  • Repeat 8 times for a total duration of 4 minutes

At this point, you can either finish to workout here or rest and repeat. The Tabata protocol used a one minute rest between sets, but you can adjust the rest period according to your fitness level.

The key to success with this training is to make sure you are doing back-to-back high intensity efforts, rather than pacing yourself to complete the task.

MAXIMUM EFFORT

Each effort requires MAXIMUM EFFORT – plus an extra 10%, if you have it in the tank. As mentioned above, your body needs to be conditioned enough to handle this kind of workout. Because you’re going to be close to maxing out on your heart rate.

Tabata training is designed for experienced exercisers who are already operating at a high level of fitness. If you are a beginner, it’s best to start with higher interval training . Or circuit training and build up to the more advanced Tabata level. You can also change exercise after each recovery to make it more like a traditional circuit session.

Another option is to start with increased recoveries of 30 secs and reduce the recovery time as you get fitter and stronger.

Be sure to listen to your body and if you are getting too exhausted. Increase the recovery times or take an extra break.

Don’t attempt this type of training more than 1-2 times per week and if you are unsure. Check with your physician before doing this kind of workout.

If you like to have the latest gadgets and apps, check out the Tabata timer apps here. They are basically just customized interval timers, but they can make the whole process a lot easier. If you don’t have a coach to tell you when to start and stop.

Finally, watch this 30-minute Tabata workout on the POPSUGAR Fitness Channel to give you and idea of what to do. Cheesy grins are by no means mandatory. But they might help cover up the fact you are in bits after the third set of reps.
